Each year as the holiday season nears, the Northern Lights League organizes a holiday plant sale that benefits MOCA . But did you know why this group is so committed to MOCA? Read more to find out and learn how you can order your own holiday greenery to benefit ovarian cancer research and programming.
For the women of the Northern Lights League, a close-knit group of women from the northern Twin Cities suburbs, fundraising and friendship is a way of life. For more than 25 years, League members have been committed to raising awareness and funds for women’s health organizations such as MOCA, as well as volunteering their time in their local communities on various projects throughout the year.
The Northern Lights League has had a very special connection to MOCA since 2003, when they chose MOCA as the beneficiary of their annual holiday plant sale fundraiser. The group was introduced to MOCA through one of their members, Marcia Savage, whose husband is Dr. John Savage, a gynecological oncologist. Their bond grew even stronger when, sadly, one of their founding members, Diane Schuda lost her battle to ovarian cancer.
Members feel that Diane would have appreciated the fact that the funding supports ovarian cancer research and medical and public education.
Since 2004, the Northern Lights League has fundraised and donated more than $200,000 to MOCA through the plant sale. The group often has a large presence at MOCA’s Annual Meeting each May and has directed funds towards MOCA-funded research grants, as well.
