Why do you take part in HOM Teal Strides for Ovarian Cancer? Who inspires you?
Being part of HOM Teal Strides for Ovarian Cancer has become a tradition for my family after my mother, Mary, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2013. She is my inspiration and the reason my family continues to support MOCA.
Even though she passed in 2016, we feel as though it is our duty to continue to help fund a search for the cure so other families do not have to be impacted by this disease. In addition, we love the energy, support, and positivity of all the survivors and their families!
How big is your team? How do you motivate others to take part with you?
The last two years, we’ve been honored with the largest team at HOM Teal Strides! In both years, we have had more than 60 team members.
My mother had an amazingly positive impact on others while she was with us, so it is not difficult to find others who want to support her legacy and MOCA. By reaching out to our entire network of friends, family, and coworkers, we are able to recruit a large group for this event.
What would you say to someone who is considering taking part in the event of for the first time?
Get to the event early – there is so much to do and see before the race has started that you do not want to miss! Also, make sure you bring a friend or family member to run with you if you decide to run the 5k. The race is perfect to run with others!
If you’re not a runner, make sure you go to the finish line to cheer on and motivate those who are running hard! And, of course, the 2K walk is perfect for anyone who wants to show their support.
What’s the best part of the day?
I believe the best part of the day is the speeches that are given before the race. It is inspiring to hear the stories of others and the progress that is being made in ovarian cancer research. These stories hit home and remind me how important it is to participate in this event.
What motivates you to fundraise for HOM Teal Strides?
Fundraising is one way that I can make an impact and help find a cure for ovarian cancer. If there is something I can do that will potentially prevent other women and their families from being affected by this disease, then I believe it is worth doing.
In addition, MOCA gave my mother a support group and a sense of hope. I want to help fund this organization that can continue to do this for others. Our fundraising goal is always to do a little bit more than the previous year. We continue to try to provide the most fundraising we possibly can.
Can you pass along one tip for fundraising?
Reach out to as many people that you feel comfortable with to support your team. Even if they are unable to attend the event, let them know that they can still make a donation!
