Celebrating 25 Years, A Survivor’s Story
In celebration of MOCA’s 25th Anniversary, we’re highlighting those who have helped inspire our community and make a difference. Nancy Adsem is a 25 year-ovarian cancer survivor, longtime MOCA volunteer and supporter.
Nancy was diagnosed with stage 1c ovarian cancer in 1999. Nancy has devoted countless hours as a volunteer, supporting MOCA’s mission in several ways. As a 25-year survivor, she’s also an inspiration.
Here’s Nancy’s story.
What led to your ovarian cancer diagnosis?
“25 years ago, at the age of 49, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer stage 1c Nobody wants an “ovarian cancer story”, but if you have to have one – you would probably want a 1c. I like to think I am a “poster child” for early detection. Because of a gynecologist who listened to me, self-advocating and a referral to a gynecologic-oncologist, I am alive to tell my story. Frequent urination and stomach pain were my main symptoms – so vague and unimpressive. But that’s the case with ovarian cancer – and the reason I advocate for research, support and education.”
How did you first become connected with MOCA? How have you been involved over the years?
“I became aware of MOCA in 1999 – as it was first rolling out. I went to meetings and was one of the first survivors to participate in STS. Today I continue to educate health care students – hoping for more early detention.
I have also been a regular volunteer for HOM Teal Strides for Ovarian Cancer in September. I’m proud of my orange t-shirts that invite participants to ‘ask me’ [and our work to] help to raise money for research for a cure and early detection.”
What is your hope for the next 25 years of MOCA?
“MOCA has been a source of hope and improvement in the world of ovarian cancer for me. Let’s dream that 25 years from now the disease has been wiped out and future generations can celebrate a “past disease”.
In the meantime, MOCA will continue to provide hope and support for families who encounter an ‘ovarian cancer story’.”
Nancy is excited to celebrate 25 years of survivorship and MOCA’s 25th Anniversary at MOCA’s HOM Teal Strides for Ovarian Cancer, Saturday, September 7.
